Cubs Scouts and Venturers Take on The Army Print E-mail

Recently the scouts and Venturers visited Aiken Barracks Dundalk. The visit was facilited by the Reserve Defence Force. The main organiser of the trip was Jonathan Thorthon a Cub leader here with the group and he is also a member of the RDF.

The boys and girls got the grand tour of all the equipment and machines etc. They got to see all the weapons that the army have including rocket launchers, machine guns, hand guns, field artillery and tanks.

Not alone did they get to see the weapons but they also got to hold them and were shown how they worked including all the safety factors to do with weapons. During the day they got various lectures on cooking and personell gear that the army carry in the field. They were shown camaflauge techniques etc.

At the end of the visit the army had refreshments laid on for all the scouts and venturers.

Also the previous evening the 2 cub sections also visited the barracks and also got to see everthing the army do. All in all over 150 members of the group visited the barracks over the 2 days.

The leaders would like to thank the members of the RDF especially Jim Hand (who is also a parent on one of our scouts ) to Pat Dotherty and to former scout leader Barry Sherry  who  give our members the royal tour and pulled out all the stops to ensure that the scouts really enjoyed their trip to the barracks. Maybe they will recruit some members from this also , but hopefully just not yet.
