The last weekend in May saw scout leader Liam Murray taking his team to the County Scoutcraft Competition which was this year held in Tanagh Outdoor centre close to Cootehill.
This years competition was run as a lightweight camping event with emphasis on survival and backwoods cooking. On Friday night it was set up of the site and instructions on what was happing over the weekend. On Saturday it was a hard day with a hike through Dartry Forest of approx 15km having to find various points by map. At these bases various tasks had to be completed including building a survival shelter, First aid, Crossing a river after building a bridge, Backwoods cooking including fishing. This was a long day. That evening we had a cooking competition having to cook on trainga cookers. After that is was a campfire where Liam took out his guitar and the singing and joke telling went on late. After this the scouts retired to their survival shelters where they slept for the night. Next day they had to build a raft and then race them on the Dromore river. This was held in lovely sunny weather.
Carrickmacross were represented by patrol leader Niall Woods, Shane Mc Connell, Siobhan Hayes, Katie Morris, Alice Cunningham, Jim Duffy, Stephen Kearney.
Carrickmacross won the competition this year but were closely run in second by only 9 points from the team from Bailebourgh. There was great delight when the results were announced by County Competition Coordinator Johnny Hancox, as the Carrick team were very young due to the scouts doing their Junior Cert all pulling out of the team so for that reason alone it was a great result. The Carrick team now go forward to the all Ireland Competition in August.
Well done to Scout leaders Liam Murray, Caoimhe Martin, Reggie Maggs, Conan Connolly and Sean Cunningham who attended over the weekend and were on hand to witness the Carrick victory.
