At a recent group council meeting, it was agreed to support the local swimming pool action group in their pursuit of a swimming pool in Carrickmacross.
The letter of support is reproduced below. We would encourage all members, families and friends to support the campaign.
The proposed new programme (RAP) sees a significantly increased water element so we'll all be in the water a lot more in the coming years. It would be useful to be able to swim!!!
To whom it concerns
I am writing to you to offer the support of 3rd Monaghan Scout Group in your endevours to secure a swimming facility for Carrickmacross.
The 3rd Monaghan scout group is one of the largest in the country, with over 200 youth members ranging in age from 6 to 21 as well as 40 adult volunteer leaders.
The scout programme is focused on outdoor activities with an emphasis on peer-groups working together under adult supervision. A significant proportion of the programme entails water actifivites including swimming, water-safety, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, diving and sailing. An essential prerequsite for participation in these programme elements is, naturally, swimming proficiency on the part of leaders and youth members alike.
Without access to a local pool, our group is at a disadvantage in this regard and our programme activities in water are not to the standards we would like. Access to a pool requires a coach trip to Dundalk or Monaghan – a costly and environmentally unsound proposition.
Scouting Ireland, our national organisation, is currently developing a revised, modernised programme across all age ranges. Water activites are actually increasing in emphasis in this new programme and will be an even more integral part of core activities in the future.
Our group council has discussed the matter and unanimously agreed to support the provision of a swimming pool in the town.
Yours in Scouting,
Peter Mee
Group Secretary,
3rd Monaghan Carrickmacross. |
