30 Monday night cubs spend an enjoyable weekend camping on the Groups campsite at Dun An Ri. This was the first proper nights camp on the site since it was developed last year and the location more than meets expectations. The weekend was filled with a combination of fun and hard work as cubs learned a little bit about what it takes to establish and run an overnight.
Designed to give cubs going to Jamboree a taste of camping, the weekend got off to a shaky start as the heavens opened at 11.00 on Saturday - the designated meet time. Fortunately, the containers newly located on the site came in useful to store gear and cubs while leaders erected one of the new mini-marquees. As the rain continued, cubs played charades until it was clear enough to start pitching tents.
With a few nights practice under their belts, cubs were given the responsibility of pitching their own icelantic tents. This went well enough by and large with a little leader intervention. However, one group managed to put their tent up inside out - alright until they went looking for guy ropes!

Getting the fire going After a break for lunch, cubs finished putting up their tends and arranging their sleeping gear. A trail activity took place in the afternoon with first aid, river crossing and fire-lighting bases. Tea time followed with everyone tucking in to a delicious spagetti bolognese and garlic bread meal prepared by the leaders. Cubs assisted with wash up and went off for a well-received game of capture-the-flag.
Afterwards, a mini-campfire was set up and cubs enjoyed a supper of sausage rolls (some even had onions!). Lights out theoretically occurred at 10.30 but in effect some cubs never seemed to quite grasp the concept of sleep!
Sunday morning dawned brilliant and after a breakfast of cereals, fruit, bread and yogurts, cubs were introduced to the gentle art of ditching camp. The good weather was a blessing and everything was down and packed well ahead of schedule. A short spiritual ceremony was followed by a selection of games until parents arrived to pick up tired cubs just before lunch time.
Roll on Jamboree!
 it's all about teamwork!
Special thanks to Tuesday cub leaders Barry & Caoimhe who turned up to help out, GL Liam Murray who stayed over, Martin Cunningham for helping out with the spiritual element and all the other leaders who dropped in. |
