The Survival Night Print E-mail

All 8 of us headed into the venture room at 6 o clock completely unexpecting of the horrors that lay ahead of us!!! Lol! We were all equipped with all the things we needed for a normal camp. Ha little did we know that Jonny and the troop had completely different ideas for us. We went into the room to learn that we were actually going on a survival night – bloody brilliant just what we wanted!! Now as if that wasn’t bad enough they then proceeded to strip our bags off everything bar our sleeping bags, a jacket and jumper. They took our spare clothes and food BUT the worst was still to come – then they took our phones – ha would they live to regret that!!!!
So then we were split into groups of two; Maria and Catherine, Brian and Jim, Me (Rachel) and Kello, Chunk and Niall ( Ha they were doomed from the start!). We were then blind folded and put in different cars and took on a trip through the middle of nowhere, around the world and back again and eventually we landed in Dun A Rí. We were given a map of Dun a Rí with different numbers on it which told us there was an orienteering stamp there with the corresponding number. When we finished that we had to go to the campsite. Stupidly enough me and Kel thought that that was the end of the torture but ha no way, life with the ventures is never ever that easy – you would think we’d have realised that by now.
On arrival at the campsite we were handed 2 survival bags, an envelope, and a bag of food with 6 rashers, 4 sausages, a few potatoes, chopped green peas, 2 bananas, 2 oranges and a lighter – lucky us, we really hit gold!! When we opened the envelope we were delighted to see a bar of chocolate (the leaders do actually have a tiny wee bit of a heart!). We also got a map with a place in the middle of Muff marked with the words “camping here” – it was in the bloody middle of nowhere – surprise surprise!! Kel and I sat staring at the map stunned for about 20 mins wondering how the hell we were supposed to get there – when jonny kindly pointed out the arrows marked on the roads we needed to follow but of course the two Einsteins hadn’t noticed them!!
So away we went on our not so “ mini adventure”. It seemed like we were walking forever and me and Kel weren’t even sure if on the right track – after all it was the two of us! But then we came to a crossroad and saw a church lit up in the pitch dark on the left and we jumped for joy we couldn’t believe we were actually on the right road because the church and crossroads were marked on the map. We were over half way there. We continued on down the road for a bit and to our joy we saw Jonny and James coming in the cars, to get us eventually at around 12, I think. They had already got Jim and Brian but there was no sign of Maria and Catherine or Niall and Chunk. We drove around looking for them – ha bet those mobiles would have come in very handy!!! Finally Jonny got a call saying they had got lost and used a phone in some house to call him.
When we were all re-united again, at about 1 o’clock in the night, we started on our delicious dinner!! We put two rashers on tin foil, diced the potatoes and put them on top, then put the peas and another layer of rashers and wrapped them in tin foil and threw it onto the embers of the fire to cook for just over 30 minutes. Surprisingly enough it was actually quite tasty, you know what they say hungers a great sauce!

We then headed off to bed on the lovely, stony, hard ground under the cold, starry sky in our sleeping bags and survival bags. Mind you some of us didn’t get all that much shut eye thanks to chunk!! The next morning we were woke by the rain, after a very uncomfortable night. We then ate the little food that was left. The best part was we all thought it was over and that we were getting home to some proper food but Ha no such luck, the slave drivers a.k.a Jonny, James, Gene, and Edel had different ideas for us! We had to walk back to the campsite – while they drove!! The weather was actually good so it wasn’t all that bad – bar Chunk’s so called singing!! When we arrived back at the campsite, exhausted, hungry and a mess, we got a drink – about time we got something nice!! Eventually we were on our way home. Kel and I were well chuffed with ourselves, who would have thought we would read the map properly!! It was actually a good weekend to do once and hopefully one that won’t be repeated for along time – Hint hint!
