28 scouts and 12 leaders recently returned from the annual scout camp which this year was held in the costal Curracloe in County Wexford. The camp was held in beautiful sunshine for 10 days from the 30th June to the 8th July. The camp had many hightlights and for the first time campers it will long stick in their memory.

The camp started on the friday when the scouts left Carrickmacross for their home for the next 10 days at the lovely costal  resort of Curracloe in Co. Wexford. On arrival the scouts had to pitch their tents and put up their campsite including tables and chairs, dresser and various other gadgets to make themseles more comfortable.

The next day the group headed for the lovely beach for the first of many swims over the course of the camp. A game of beach volleyball was had and this was great fun.

ImageThe following day the group set off to climb mt Leinster. This was the first big climb for some of the new scouts. The climb was tough going but all the scouts reached the summit. There was a great sense of achievement on the faces of the scouts when they completed the climb.

The next day the group went to a nearby adventure centre. Here the scouts took part in canoeing and had a go on the climbing wall. The scouts enjoyed their days adventure here. The following day the group went to Wexford town to the swimming pool and then took in some shopping in the town. Later that evening the cooking competition was run. Each patrol had to cook a 3 course meal for the whole patrol on a set budget. The cooking was to a very high standard this year with some of the desserts being really original.

ImageThe following day saw one of the highlights of the camp; a trip to a theme park in Wales called Oakwood. This was a long day which started at 6am with a bus to the fast ferry in Rosslare. The ferry crossing took 2 hours and the scouts arrived at the theme park around 11.30am. The scouts enjoyed the rest of the day here taking in all the rides and attractions of this great fun park. At 5pm it was time to get back to the ferry for the trip back to Wexford. The scouts arrrived back in the campsite at 9.30pm tired but happy after a great day.

ImageThe next night saw another highlight of all camps the night hike. This year the scouts were awoken at 1pm and given a briefing on the night hike. The scouts had to follow a route with the aid of trail signs and compass bearings. Along the way the scouts had to find hidden messages and to complete various challenge bases. The hike finished on the beach with a game of capture the flag in the sand dunes. Before the scouts headed back toi the campsite they all watched the sunrise over the irish sea.

ImageOver the next few days the scouts had various trips to nearby towns and had numerous on site activities. On the final night the camp finished with the traditional campfire. The scouts did various sketches and sang many songs. The night finished with the presentation of awards including the winning patrol.

The next morning the scouts awoke, packed all the gear and headed back to Carrickmacross, arriving home at about 5pm.
