The Venture Scout Section, 15 to 18 year olds, decided early in the year that they wanted to partake in a triathlon to challenge themselves and to raise money for Carrick Cancer Society and also their annual camp to Poland. So the Venture Scouts decided to organise their own Triathlon locally and after a bit of research into suitable locations and insurance, etc it was agreed that it would be based around Greaghlone Lake in Magheracloone.

The route was laid out and consisted of a 200m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. The day started off well with overcast weather and everyone arriving on time with anticipation. All participants double checked their gear and got into their wetsuits ready to go. Before the race everyone got briefed on race safety, etc and with excitement and nervousness in the air, the first wave of participants hit the water at 10am and set off to the finish line.

Everyone that took part in the Triathlon on the day enjoyed the race while finding parts of the course quite hard. The weather unfortunately didn’t hold up for the day with hail stones coming down in the cycle at one point but that didn’t discourage anyone from finishing. James Fox, a Venture Leader, said that it was a good course to introduce the members into the world of Triathlons and that the Venture Scouts and Leaders should be very proud of themselves for completing the course and raising a total of €2,400 for Carrick Cancer Society. All in all the day was a great success with all the Venture Scouts going away wondering what they will get up to next!

The Venture Scout Section would like to thank everyone that helped out on the day especially: The Civil Defence, Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre for the lend of the wetsuits, Monaghan Sub Aqua Club and Bailieborough Scout Leaders for the safety on the water and also the local Gardaí for helping with the stewards on the roads. For more photos on the event visit www.carrickscouts.ie
