On August 1st 2006, Two Scout Leaders Liam Murray and David McCarthy went on a wee climbing day in the Mourne Mountains during the so called “Break”.

We went in via the Trassy Track and decided on the Spelleck area. No top ropes were used as we lead up each climb placing our protection as we went and belaying from the bottom. Our climbs were selected from a guide book which tells you what grade each climb is and shows a photo of it. This is invaluable so you don’t get stuck half way up a climb that is out of your depth.

ImageWe managed several climbs in grades Moderate, Difficult, Very Difficult and Severe. We tried a Hard Severe but a large overhanging bolder was our stumbling point. Maybe next time…….
