We start the history here but we have alot more to come. Let us know if you have old pictures that we could post here.
Brief History
Scouting was founded in Ireland in 1927 and within 5 years scouting was taking place in Carrickmacross. The Carrickmacross group was established in 1932 by Christy Boyle who lived in O’Neill Street. The first troop was invested on the front lawn of the church in May of 1932. The assistant Scoutmaster was Dermott o Carroll from Cuchullain Tce. The Troop colours were established as Royal Blue and Orange these still remain as troop colours to this day.
The first meetings took place in the Columban rooms which were at the rear of the current scout hall. They are now used as storage sheds for the parish. The only remaining member of the first troop is Micheal Downey from Cloughvalley who join us recently as guest of honour at our 70 years celebration. The first big event the troop took part in was the Eucharistic Congress which took place in the Phoenix park in Dublin in 1932. They provided a guard of honour and other duties on the day. The following year in 1933 they had a camp in Termofeckin which was their first official camp.
The Carrickmacross scout troop have had many meeting places over the years. Having started of in the Columbian rooms , they then moved to the supper room in the catholic hall. They also spent time in the Holy Family hall before moving to the den they are currently in. In and around 1990 we took a lease out on the whole building from the parish and the building is now known as the Carrickmacross Scout Den. The den was refurbished in the early 90’s to give each section their own dedicated room along with a store room and toilet block.
In recent times the scout unit has grown from strength to strength. We now have 5 sections going strong with the scouts, cubs and beavers all having 2 meeting nights to accommodate the numbers. Our den is currently used 5 nights of the week. In recent times our camps have taken different sections to various parts of the country and the world. We have recently camped in Luxembourg, New York and Austria to mention a few. Our unit went totally mixed in 2003 thus giving girls a chance to enjoy the fun of Scouting.
So from humble beginnings in 1932 of 2 leaders and 16 scouts we have grown this year to having 36 leaders and over 220 members with our own state of the art scout den. All credit to Christy Boyle for having the vision to start it all off in 1932 and because of this a lot of people in Carrickmacross have enjoyed scouting.
A pictorial record of annual camps is available here . Can you make out some of the people in the pictures?. Where are they now?
A history album has been created in our gallery.
